On behalf of the Latvian Association for the Study of Pain, we are pleased to invite you to join us in Riga for the 3rd Baltic Headache Conference, taking place on 4 September 2026.
For the third time, we are bringing together specialists in pain medicine and physicians from various medical disciplines who are involved or interested in headache evaluation, diagnosis, and treatment. Our mission remains to advance high-quality, patient-centered care through education, research, and collaborative knowledge-sharing within a flexible, innovative, and open professional community.
As in previous years, the scientific program will feature expert lectures by leading pain specialists, covering a wide range of topics related to headache medicine.
The conference will host distinguished speakers, internationally recognized in the field of pain medicine.

Professor Messoud Ashina is Professor of Neurology and Director of the Human Migraine Research Unit at the Department of Neurology & Danish Headache Center, Rigshospitalet, the University of Copenhagen, Denmark. He is Past President of the International Headache Society (2019–2021) and is Past General Secretary of the European Headache Federation. Prof. Ashina is a Fellow of the European Academy of Neurology. In addition, he is an Associate Editor of Cephalalgia, an Associate Editor of The Journal of Headache and Pain, and an Associate Editor of Brain.
Prof. Ashina’s research interests include the pathophysiology of migraine and mechanisms of action of antimigraine medications, as well as experimental migraine models, functional neuroimaging, and novel antimigraine drug targets. He has authored over 600 papers, abstracts and book chapters on the topic of headache, including migraine and cluster headache.
Having obtained his MD from the Azerbaijan Medical University, Prof. Ashina went on to complete his residency in neurology at the University of Copenhagen, where he gained his PhD and DMSc. In the past, he has served as President of the Danish Headache Society.
Professor Zaza Katsarava is head of the department of neurology at the Evangelical Hospital in Unna, and a professor of neurology at the University of Essen in Germany. He is also the new president of the European Headache Federation and is active in numerous other organizations and boards for headache relief. His training in neurology began in Tbilisi, Georgia, and has since expanded to include the University of Essen in Germany, the Harvard School of Public Health, and the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health.
Professor Katsarava’s main interest focuses on headache and pain, especially the risk factors and mechanisms of chronic headache. He has used electrophysiological and imaging techniques to investigate the plasticity of the pain network in development of chronic headache. He is a principal investigator in several of the large scale population-based studies on predictors and risk factors of headache chronicity. He has published widely in peer-reviewed journals and elsewhere for over 20 years.
Aydin Gozalov is a consultant, PhD, at the Danish Headache Center and Department of Neurology, Glostrup University Hospital. Since 2001, Aydin Gozalov has been involved in headache research and responsible for the craniofacial pain/trigeminal neuralgia unit at the Danish Headache Center. Aydin Gozalov received his doctorate from Azerbaijan Medical University and completed his training in neurology at the University of Copenhagen, where he received his PhD. Since 2001, Aydin Gozalov has been involved in headache research with a special interest in headaches and trigeminal neuralgia.
MD, PhD, EDPM, Neurologist, Headache and Pain Specialist, Consultant at Institute of Family Medicine, serves as President of Ukrainian Headache Research Society, Executive Secretary of Ukrainian Association for the Study of Pain, European Pain Federation EFIC Councilor Ukraine. Areas of clinical and scientific interest include headache, neuropathic pain, low back pain. Took part in several clinical trials on pain. Author of more than 60 publications.
Dr. Gogeta Gegelashvilli is a neurologist, healthcare executive, and public health leader with extensive experience in clinical medicine, healthcare management, and health policy. He completed his medical education at the Tbilisi State Medical Institute, with postgraduate specializations in Neurology and Public Health and Healthcare Organization, and advanced training in pharmacotherapy and healthcare administration in the United States, Israel, and Ukraine.
Dr. Gegelashvilli currently serves as Chief Neurologist at the David Metreveli Medical Center and practices at the Medical Diagnostic Center “Neoklinika.” He previously held senior leadership roles at the Sarajishvili Institute of Neurology and Neurosurgery, including Chief Physician and Medical Director. In addition to his clinical work, he has played a significant role in national health policy as Deputy Chairman of the Committee on Healthcare and Social Issues in the Parliament of Georgia and continues to lead patient advocacy initiatives as Chairman of the Georgian Alliance for Patient Safety and Chief Scientific Advisor to the international initiative “Patient Organizations of Eastern Europe and Asia for Patients’ Rights and Safety.”
